Pascal x Summer Puppies: Three Weeks Old

Well another great week with the puppies is in the books.  Bert and Ernie have continued to develop on track.  Their eyes and ears are on board now and they are much better at moving about the whelping box.  It's been great fun watching them interact more and more with one another and with their dam as well as with the toys that have been added to their space.

At the beginning of the week we introduced a designated potty area for the puppies in the form of pee pads.  By the end of the week they were using it very consistently and toddling over to the pads to pee when needed.  Soon we will move downstairs and will begin to add pellets to the pee pads, eventually replacing them with potty boxes filled with recycled newspaper pellets.

Here is a video of the puppies at 19 days old.

We are enjoying these puppies enormously and are excited about getting to know their developing personalities in the weeks ahead.

Pascal x Summer Puppies: Two Weeks Old

The puppies had a great second week of life.  They have been growing by leaps and bounds.   We had a quite week cocooned in the warm guest bedroom where Summer lovingly tended to her puppies and together we watched them grow and develop further.
We continued with the Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction exercises as well as twice daily weighing and frequent nail trims.  And lots and lots of cuddles.
Ernie - 8 days old

Bert - 8 days old
This week both Bert and Ernie's eyes opened and by the end of the week they were increasingly up on their legs moving about the whelping box.

Ernie - 14 days old

Bert - 14 days old

Pascal x Summer Puppies: One Week Old

Our precious puppies have made it through their first week of life.  Summer is proving to be an excellent mother to her little puppies.  They are gaining weight exponentially and have become fat and chubby little pups.

In their first week of life the puppies are very vulnerable as they cannot regulate their own temperature so need to be kept warm and safe.  We keep the whelping box at a temperature that allows the puppies to be safe while not being uncomfortable for Summer.  The puppies spend lots of time snuggling up with her for comfort and warmth.

At this young age the neonates cannot hear and their eyes are not yet open, they are however pretty good at moving around in order to get to their mother for nursing.  Summer is attentive and gentle, calm and content.  I could sit and watch them for hours on end.

Bert on the left and Ernie on the right.

Although the puppies can't see and hear at this young age they are capable of smelling, feeling and tasting.  We started the Bio Sensor Exercises and Early Scent Introduction on day three and will continue until the puppies are sixteen days old.  It is always enjoyable for me doing these exercises and introducing the puppies to novel scents and seeing how they will react to them.   Their nails are trimmed every three days and they receive a plentiful amount of cuddles.  These early days are tender and sweet and as much as I am looking forward to watching their personalities develop I am definitely enjoying every minute of their early weeks of life.

New Champion and another BPIG win for Barbevoix Oscar De Northrock

On Saturday December 8th at the Brantford & District Kennel & Obedience Club, Oscar completed the requirements for his CKC Championship with a Best of Breed win awarded by judge Anik Primeau from Quebec. At only 8 months of age he finished very quickly, undefeated in the classes and acquired a BPIG win last month along the way.

In the second show on December 8th, Oscar again went Best of Breed and also won Best Puppy in Sporting Group under judge Judy Taylor. We are grateful to these judges for recognizing the quality of this promising young Barbet. Thank you to Peter Scott, whom Oscar just adores, for handling him to these exciting wins.

Bred by Catherine Verge, Oscar is by Northrock's All Night Boogie and out of Barbevoix Spezia dit Holala. Oscar is co-owned with Nellemarie Hyde and we are thrilled with the success he has had thus far. We look forward to seeing what the next chapter will bring for this fun-loving boy.
